Ten Things To Ask Yourself Before Getting A Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Questions to ask yourself before getting a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier? Can you handle their personality and energy? Can you keep up on the grooming?
So you are considering bringing a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier into your life?
Great choice! These fluffy, charming and mildly mischievous medium sized dogs will quickly become your best friend. But before you rush off to find a breeder, take a minute to ask yourself some key questions. You'll be glad you did.
1. Am I Ready for a Dog Who Thinks It's a Human?
Wheatens are not just dogs. They're a toddler wrapped in fur. They want to be included in everything. If you are going somewhere, guess who wants to come? If you sit on the couch, guess who's right beside you, or better yet on top of you?
If you can't handle a dog who escorts you to the bathroom and expects constant attention and affection, a Wheaten might not be the right choice for you. They are a bit of a velcro dog!
2. Can I Handle the Zoomies?
Wheatens are playful little dynamos. They can go from zero to 60 in 2 seconds. One minute they are napping at your feet, and the next, they are running laps around your living room, leaping over furniture like an Olympic Athlete. And just when you think they have run out of steam... it will start all over again.
If you're not ready to keep up, you might find yourself exhausted, or tripping over a small indoor tornado.
3. Am I Prepared For a Lifetime of Grooming?
Those gorgeous, soft and silky locks don't come without a price. Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers require regular brushing, trimming and grooming. If left unchecked, they'll turn into walking tumbleweeds.
Do you love spending your weekend mornings brushing out mats and tangles, or would you rather be enjoying brunch with your friends?
4. Am I Ready to Hear" What Kind of Dog is That?" 29 times a day?
Wheatens are not your average dog breed, and they often attract curious stares. Be prepared to answer the same question over and over again: "What kind of dog is that? or "Is that a Doodle?"
Spoiler: You'll develop a pat answer and start talking in your sleep. "It's a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Yes, they're hypoallergenic. No they don't shed. Yes they're super cute and friendly."
5. Can I Handle Their Sassy Personality?
Wheatens have an opinion and an attitude. They're not the type to roll over and do whatever they’re told. They have a strong sense of self and can be a little stubborn.
Are you prepared to deal with a dog who may outsmart you at every turn? If you're a bit of a "control freak" you might find yourself constantly negotiating with a dog who thinks it's the boss. (Spoiler alert: It probably is.)
6. Do I Want to Live With a Comedian?
Wheatens are full of personality. The emphasis is on silly dog antics. Whether it's their weird, wiggle butt dance when they're excited or their ability to fit into absurdly tiny spaces (including your lap, even when there's no space left), these dogs know how to make you laugh.
If you don't appreciate a dog who will, without hesitation, make you wonder if you're living with an entertainer for hire, then maybe you should reconsider. But if you can't get enough of their goofy charm, get ready for endless Wheaten amusement.
7. Do I Want a Dog Who Will Give Me "The Look" of Judgement?
Wheatens are surprisingly expressive. And while they're generally good natured and affectionate, they also have an uncanny ability to give you "The Look." It's the "I can't believe you're making me do this" look. Or even the "I don't need your help I'm fine thanks" look.
Be prepared to feel like you're being judged by a 35 pound fur ball. Are you cool with this passive aggressive stare down, or do you prefer your dog to only look at you with complete devotion?
8. Am I Prepared for a Dog Who's a Little Bit Sociable?
If you like a quiet walk without being approached by every other dog in the neighborhood, a Wheaten might make you reconsider your life choices. Wheatens generally love people and dogs alike. If you're an introvert who values personal space, they may test your limits with their eager desire to make new friends, human and canine alike.
Can you handle the constant socializing, or do you want a dog that can hang back a little? Wheatens are basically the life of the party. Okay, you've been warned!
9. Do I Want to Fall Truly, Madly, Deeply?
You remember the movie where Renee Zellweger says to Tom Cruise "You had me at hello?" Well this will be you. Wheaten Terriers are irresistible. With their adorable faces and loving nature it's easy to fall head over heels in love with these dogs.
Can you deal with those love filled, moon eyes, staring up at you with complete devotion? This love affair will surprise you. Be prepared.
10. Do I Have a Soft Spot for Dogs Who Think They're Puppies Forever?
Let's be honest, Wheatens don't grow up. They will get taller, but they'll never lose their playful, mischievous nature. Even in old age, they're still acting like puppies. If you love the idea of a dog that's forever youthful and fun loving, then you'll enjoy this breed.
But if you're looking for a laid-back, no-nonsense adult dog who quietly watches the world go by, you might be in for a shock. Wheatens are lifelong puppies, and they'll keep you on your toes until the very end.
